Social Media Dialogue Part 5: 9 More Practical Tips

Download Audio MP3 | 01:07:38

Josh, Tim, and Rachel continue a multi-part series on how to be an effective pro-life advocate on social media. In this episode they continue a series of 35 practical tips in five categories.

The episode begins with a brief discussion of Tim and Rachel’s favorite podcast, “Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality.” If you want to skip this, the substantive content begins at 10:01.

Here are the tips covered in this episode:
Social Media Specific Tips

  1. Choose a friendly looking profile pic.
  2. Use emoticons and emojis. Bitmojis too if you’re in a texting conversation.
  3. Don’t name drop philosophers and theories or other technical language.
  4. Be prepared to repeat and re-explain.
  5. Understand there may be unseen dynamics at play – some of the commenters may have a history there, they may make comments in what they consider a teasing tone that comes off rude to outsiders, they may have had or encouraged an abortion, they may feel like Planned Parenthood saved their life, they may have been screamed at outside of a clinic.
  6. Remember, other people are watching.
  7. Don’t feed trolls.
  8. Be patient if they insult you.
  9. Don’t be afraid to separate yourself from or disagree with other pro-lifers posting if they are being mean-spirited.

Podcast: One Thing Every Pastor Can Do to Prevent Abortions in Their Congregation

Download Audio MP3 | 00:36:19

Josh Brahm was invited to address a group of future clergy as well as some of those who train clergy at a Lutheran Seminary during his last speaking tour in Canada. After sharing a little about his background and the focus of Equal Rights Institute, Josh focused his talk on what pastors and priests can do to prevent abortions in their congregations. He then took questions from the audience.

Four months later he published this article on the subject, and we would strongly encourage you to share it on social media so we can spread the word about this idea!

Questions:

  • 22:32: Do you think adding this concept to a website or various church websites would help spread the word?
  • 23:52: Comment about how it would be even better if pastors were also willing to offer financial assistance to unwed, pregnant women, “putting their money where their mouth is.”
  • 24:45: These practical dialogue tips you speak of, are those on a website?
  • 29:02: What are common ways that pro-life people misunderstand pro-choice people?

The audio cut out shortly after Josh finished answering that question, so unfortunately we don’t have the last few minutes of the Q&A session.

Reddit Responds to Tim’s Bodily Rights Article

Josh stumbled upon a pro-choice Reddit thread reacting to Tim’s Autumn in the Sovereign Zone article and decided to get Tim and Rachel’s spontaneous responses live on the podcast.

Afterward, they talk about how to respond to people who say that it’s only wrong to take Thalidomide if the mother is going to have an abortion anyway because then they’re not really causing suffering to this “potential person.”

Response to Pro-Choice Propaganda

Josh, Tim, and Rachel respond to a pro-choice video on illegal abortions in El Salvador. Click here to watch the pro-choice video we’re responding to.

The show begins with a discussion of our favorite Pixar movies. If you want to get straight to the main topic, you can skip to 10:23 in the episode.

Apologies for occasional wonky audio in this episode. We were playing around with some new post-production techniques that, once dialed in, will improve the audio quality of the podcast. But not everything is totally dialed in yet, so this episode has some occasional mic bleed. Thankfully, we were able to mix most of it out.
