6 Practical Dialogue Tips: What We’ve Learned from Talking with 5,000 Pro-Choice People
In this lecture, I will share our best tips for creating the kind of conversational environment where people are the most likely to change their minds. Some of these are tips that we’ve been talking about since we launched ERI, and some of them we just developed in the last year, representing major changes in our approach to dialogue. This is one of our most fun speeches, filled with great stories of conversations to illustrate our points.
The Most Persuasive Pro-Life Argument
In 2013, a group of advocates from multiple pro-life organizations started heavily experimenting with a different way of arguing for the personhood of the unborn. We were all shocked at how much more effective it was at changing the minds of pro-choice people than any other argument we had used before. We call it the Equal Rights Argument. This argument masterfully takes premises that almost all pro-choice people already strongly agree with, and demonstrates that the only reasonable conclusion is that the unborn is a person with a right to live.
Understanding and Responding to “My Body, My Choice”
The strongest pro-choice argument is one that grants the entire pro-life case that the unborn is a full human being (like an adult). But it goes on to claim that abortion should still be legal because women have a right to control their own bodies. Pro-life advocates shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss these “bodily rights” arguments, but they also don’t need to be afraid of them. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or new to sharing the pro-life message, I will give you a roadmap for making a powerful case against these arguments. The audience will leave ready to engage any pro-choice advocate who defends abortion with “bodily rights” arguments.
9 Faulty Pro-Life Arguments & Tactics
Want to be the most effective pro-life ambassador possible? This presentation will certainly help you do that! While surprising to some audiences, pro-lifers occasionally make arguments that are easily refutable. They also sometimes use tactics during abortion debates that are counter-productive. I carefully analyze nine examples in this presentation.
Relational Apologetics: How to Cultivate Friendship Amidst Challenging Conversations
When we use the phrase “relational apologetics,” we mean trying to change a person’s mind about a core belief in the context of genuine friendship. Most people will not change their minds about a serious subject after one conversation, so an ongoing dialogue with a friend can be really helpful.
When I speak about relational apologetics, I usually illustrate with the story of my friend Deanna Unyk, who began dialoguing with me about abortion two years ago, and began self-identifying as pro-life one year ago. I also illustrate with some inspiring stories of other people whose lives have been changed through unlikely friendships. Finally, I offer several practical tips for cultivating friendships with people who disagree with you about important issues.
Ignorance, Fear and Apathy: 3 Problems the Church Faces in Confronting Abortion
This message is meant for Christian audiences. I take a hard look at the major reasons that many churches don’t get involved in pro-life ministry, and why these reasons are flawed. Practical advice is given for Christians to be ready to engage with their sphere of influence on the issues most important to them, as well as instruction in equipping their pastors to be more actively pro-life.
Pregnancy Resource Center Banquet Speech
I have a special speech that I’ve created specifically for Pregnancy Resource Center Fundraising Banquets. Ask me for a description of that talk and why it transitions nicely to a financial appeal.
